OUR STORY

The Founding

Maroochydore Rugby Union Club was formed in 1974 when an advertisement was placed by Bev Hall calling for persons interested in the establishment of a rugby club to attend a meeting at the Maroochydore Hotel. Our first patron was then Shire Chairman Mr Eddie De Vere O.B.E. and former Queensland prop Ian Kennedy, our first President.

Climbing Ladders

1975 The club established itself at Defoes Road Bli Bli and played (and won) its first game against Gympie at Kin Kin behind the Country Life Hotel.

1976 Maroochydore entered the Sub-Districts competition in Brisbane and played there until 1981 making the semi finals in 1980 and 1981.

1982 The Sunshine Coast Rugby Union competition commenced with four clubs – Maroochydore, Caloundra, Nambour and Gympie. Maroochydore defeated Caloundra in the first Grand Final thus commencing a glorious tradition. Maroochydore has been a Grand Finalist in 21 seasons and Premiers on 13 occasions up to 2008.

1988 Junior Rugby started with the SCJRU being formed under the QJRU. 20 players signed up with Headquarters at Kawana. Michael Rice was first President.

Branching Out

1989 Junior clubs incorporated with clubs forming in Maroochydore, Caloundra, Noosa and Nambour. The year was spent building numbers with the help of to name a few – Muriel Campbell, Ann Siede, Helen Rice, Gerri Clatworth and Aileen Springhall running the canteen. Terry Marshall was the club’s first President with Michael Rice on the committee. Our playing jersey was light blue with navy shorts. U7 to U10s played in bare feet. Each club did not have teams in each age group so a lot of teams travelled to Brisbane. The Maroochydore U12s and U13s played as the Bye in the Brisbane Comp.

1992 The senior club was incorporated and in 1993 the U19 competition commenced.

1995 The junior club’s U13 and U16 teams toured New Zealand with Michael Rice coaching the U13s and Brian McCleary coaching U16s. Each team played four games with U13s being undefeated and U16s losing one game.

2004 The Senior and Junior club incorporated into one club: Maroochydore Rugby Union Club Incorporated. Both the Junior and Senior Club train and play at Cotton Tree Sports Oval known as The Cotton Dome.
